The Bill of Rights is the name for the first ten amendments to the Constitution, added in 1791. It puts clear limits on what the government can do to individuals. Among the freedoms it protects are:
- Freedom of speech, religion, the press, and assembly
- The right to a fair trial
- Protection from unreasonable searches
These rights apply to everyone living in the country, not only to citizens. That is an important detail, and it comes up again in the questions about rights for all residents.
A short answer works best: “the basic rights of Americans” or “the rights of people in the United States.”
