It was a gift from France in 1886. Its creators proposed it to honor the centennial of American independence, the end of the Civil War, and the friendship between France and the United States. For decades it was the first thing millions of arriving immigrants saw, which is why it became a symbol of welcome.
Did you know? The statue was built in France, taken apart, and shipped across the Atlantic in 1885. Workers reassembled it on its pedestal in New York before its dedication on October 28, 1886.
Several answers are accepted: New York Harbor, Liberty Island, or simply New York. Saying “New Jersey” is also accepted on some official lists, since the island sits in waters near both states, but New York Harbor is the safest answer.
