Why does each state have two senators?

What this means
Each state has two senators to give every state equal representation, regardless of its size.
At the Constitutional Convention in 1787, small states worried that larger states would control the government if seats were handed out only by population. The answer was the Great Compromise (also called the Connecticut Compromise): the House would be based on population, while the Senate would give every state the same two seats.
So both answers are accepted: “equal representation for the states” or “the Great Compromise.”
